About

Roland Denning

For the most of my adult life I have been a freelance documentary cameraman/lighting cameraman working on a huge range of films from artists' projects to feature drama and TV documentary. I've shot over 30 dramas and drama/docs and probably three times as many documentaries and arts programmes. Now my work covers direction, production, writing, photography and various curious creative ventures including my own personal film and audio work.

Most of that time I've been based in London but from 1980 to 1989 I lived in Cardiff, initially working as Cinema Co-Ordinator then Film Workshop Co-ordinator (the last time I had a proper job) at Chapter Arts Centre before I went freelance.

From 1994 to 2005 I had a company with Mike Stubbs called metamedia making short art films and running one of the first independent digital edit suites in Soho.

Sometime after that I wrote my first and only novel, The Beach Beneath The Pavement, a stupid thing to do. But some people liked it. It's quite funny.

In 2012 I formed the company Perception Management Productions with John Lundberg, Mark Pilkington and Kypros Kyprianou to complete the feature documentary Mirage Men.

During 2015-2016 I made a series of short films on the arts for the English language service of the South American TV channel teleSUR.

From 2010 to 2019 I also worked with Murray Anderson-Wallace of Patient Stories, making both dramas and docs and around issues of patient safety in healthcare.

Recently my work has been a mixture of personal and commercial documentary work, more eccentric work using found footage and writing. Examples of all of this can be found on this site.

TypeOfThing is me and anyone I can persuade to work with me.
